Global Domination: We at Global Domination saw fit to add your release, “Consuming impulse”, to our esteemed Class 6(66) hall of fame. Do you feel this album is worthy of such an honor?

Martin van Drunen: Obviously a lot of people consider the album a death metal classic. But I’m no arrogant fool who’s adoring his own work. On the other hand I’m very much aware of the influence that the album seemed to have on a lot of metalheads and still seems to have on today’s bangers, so I guess we did a pretty good job at that time. Let’s put it this way: To me this was Pestilence’s best album. and I’m honored we’re in the Class 6(66) section, but if the album’s worthy? Hard to say for someone who took part in the making of that album some 18 years ago….

GD: What was the ultimate goal for you while recording this album?

To record one of the most brutal death metal albums…

GD: Name something of interest that you remember from the recording sessions.

I never found the vox style I was looking for during the recordings. It was my first grunting effort and I got aggravated coz I thought my vox were sounding like shit. So I walked out of the studio at night, went alone into Berlin, without anyone knowing where I was going to. And after I cleared my head I returned somewhere in the night, all seemed to be in panic and I decided to record the vox. Everybody was damn chuffed with the result, except myself. I guess I needed some more beers.

GD: If you could change any one thing about this album, what would you change?

All vox.

GD: Why do you think this album means so much to those who consider it a classic?

Well, some riffs and songs are really good, and the guitar sound is killer too. But I always forget the tons of fun we had in those days. Even if all written above may not show that. It was a fresh, new and hungry line-up

GD: Finally, as an artist and musician, what special place does this album hold in your heart?

This album got worldwide attention and recognition, and it was of course my first grunting effort. “Consuming Impulse” is responsible for what I am today as a performer. I found the technique of my vocal style during the recordings of it and perfectionized it live. So this album is actually the most important one I’ve ever made.
